Chennai test: Something for the chennaites to cherish

The very invention of games and sports was again justified when Chennai, hit by one of the most disastrous cyclone, recoiled together and reunited in bad times defying the calamity witnessing another great performance by its team. Another victory for India, another series win and unbeaten strike continues. How many times in test cricket does one see a team posting 400+ in the first innings and losing? Well! A rare fixture indeed.  Just for the fact, 477 by England is the highest first innings total ever that resulted in loss.

Well, to start off, this famous Chennai test will be remembered for several reasons. The city gave a warm welcome to both the teams. Chennai has always been an amazing crowd and again this time around, they proved it. Be it 1999 renowned Pakistan win where Pakistan almost snatched a win form India’s jaw, or 2008 India win where India successfully chased down 380 run target against England. Good attendance throughout the test match substantiates the fact. A grand reception to their new favorite Joss Buttler is something that English team will remember.

A triple ton, a missed double century, a 10 wicket haul, famous England collapse and a rare failure of three greats of Team India: Kohli, Pujara and Ashwin. This win is special because it came about through a joint team effort coupled with youngsters taking the centre stage. Karun Nair(303*) had an inning of his life: Only the second Indian to score a triple hundred in test; Jadeja (10/154) getting his career best bowling figures and eventually ranking; and KL Rahul(199) consolidated his position in the team as an opener. Also the lower order contributions from Jadeja(51) and Ashwin(67) battled out England from the contest.

The description of the India’s grandeur performance will remain incomplete without an apt mention of its pacers. Bhuveneshwar, Ishant definitely out-bowled more famous English pacers. Though score card won’t portray the true story but Indian Pacer were unplayable with the ball. The moves and pressure created by them was rightly en-cashed by the spinners. When the two included pacer share 7 wickets between them on such a flat pitch, it tells you a lot about them.

England had to bat out last day to save the test match. But call it low aspirations or amazing Jadeja, they were bowled out in last two sessions after batting out first session without any harm. The stunning catch by Jadeja added feather to his crown. The win rightly justifies the amazing year that India had in test led by its stylish captain, Virat Kohli, who himself had a year to remember. A 4-0 win has solved many issues for the team as of now but has engraved some larger problems for the visitors. Middle order collapse, failed bowling and inconsistent batting are some of them.

But for the moment, this Indian team, amiably led by its ambitious captain, remains undefeated for 18th continuous match. India has strengthened its position as numero uno team. But Spin turf, home advantage and shattered English hopes are some of the elements that might eclipse this great win. These all can be negated by consistent and away performance that will make this team indelible in the history of cricket. Well, the start has been gigantic, hope it continues for long. Only time stands the witness.
