Redemption after a decade

India vs Pakistan : Finals: 2007 T20 world cup finals, J’burg: India defeated Pakistan by 5 runs. A decade after, 2017 Champion Trophy Finals, London: Pakistan defeated India by 180 runs. It is like redemption with interest. Nevertheless, a tragic end to India’s CT journey and a wonderful redemption of Pakistan as a team. The snapshot of the Finals :

  • Winning toss and putting Pakistan to bat, the start wasn’t good for India. Pakistan’s first wicket fell at 128. That meant they had got the start they wanted. Fakhar Zaman (Man of the match – 114) , the new found talent for the Men in green, got lucky when Bumrah over-stepped on a delivery which Fakhar had no answer to. But after that, it was his game to assail.
  • Once the openers were dismissed, it was Babar Azam(46) and Mhd. Hafeez(57)  who took the charge and boy, Hafeez hit the bowlers out of the park.  Pakistan capitalized on the start they wanted and posted a mammoth 338/4 on board. That meant, they had a very good chance to win the contest. GettyImages-697213760
  • Indian bowling looked very dis-oriented especially spinners. The selection of Ashwin came under scanner as he went for wicket-less 70 runs in 10 over. Pandya was brilliant with ball and so was Bhuvi and thanks to them, they pulled back little bit, still Pak posted the highest total in the history of CT finals.
  • Batting had to good and openers had full license to come out with all guns blazing and they did exactly the opposite. Reduced to 54/5, India was never in the chase and the feared was taken place. THE FAMOUS INDIAN BATTING COLLAPSE. Pandya tried to save some respect with his fluttering 76 off 43. Apart from him, all the batsman couldn’t even stand for long, handling a loss by 180 runs, biggest loss for a team in an ICC tournament final.Pakistan-captain-Sarfraz-Ahmed-celebrates-with-Shadab-Khan-after-catching-out-Kedar-Jadhav
  • 2003 World Cup Final flash back were in the backdrop as India kept on losing wickets one by one. Amir was lethal with ball and he was the one who did the maximum damage. The famous top 3 fell to him cheaply. Dhoni threw his wicket and Yuvraj was caught by a plump ball. Jadeja would be scolding himself for that run out of Pandya and tail-enders followed the predecessors.
  • Due credit must be given to Pakistani fielders. Must admit, there was a sharp contrast between the team that played against India in the first match and the team that played here. The performance was several notches up and cannot negate the fact that over-confidence killed India. Pakistan

So that brings us to the end of the tournament. We hope you liked our coverage. A post tournament review coming up soon. Till then, keep reading, keep sharing

  • Man of the Match- Fakhar Zaman

In a time of trends, Class had an upper hand.

India vs Bangladesh: The contest had to be all the way India’s and it was. India started off as favourites and they ended up being the finalist. The batting debacle for one and accomplishment for another. The snapshot review of the match;

  • Winning toss and fielding first, India had a perfect start reducing their Asian counterpart for 31/2. But from there on, it was the famous pair of Tamim (70)and Rahim (61) that made the matters good for the Tigers. After some hicups, it was the off-timer Jadhav that picked Tamim and after that, the procession started. GettyImages-696203836
  • The scenes could have been worse for Bangla had there been no dropped chances and of course over-stepping. Pandaya had a bad outing today but Kedhar Jadhav (2/22) made up for him. Bumrah(10-039-2) was again brilliant with the ball, especially in the last overs and because of them, India pulled back things within control to end the innings on 264/7.
  • 265 was never going to trouble Indians on the flat surface against not so experienced attack and yes, that was the difference between both the sides: Experience. Sabbir Rahman came in at number 3 when the score was 1/1 and innings needed consolidation. Instead he started blazing his guns, taking chances without settling and consequently,  found himself ruing on 19. GettyImages-696279462
  • After losing the tournament’s highest scorer Dhawan(46) cheaply, Kohli(96) and Rohit (123)flooded the stadium with some quality batting. It was an exquisite display of class and brilliance as Rohit and Kohli both brought India home. The win has set up a final clash with arch rival Pakistan. Ring a bell ? 2007 T20 World Cup. That will be 10th Final appearance of Indian team in ICC events.

The Unpredictable Win !

England vs Pakistan: The clash between Undefeated and Unpredictable. And miraculously so, the unpredictable defeated the invincible. Pakistan played with their hearts out and as they say,” Luck favours the brave”. Pakistan came on top and emerged victorious in this clash. The snapshot review of the match:

  • England started good, but after losing Root for 46 in 28th over, they lost the plot completely. Losing 4 big wickets in the middle overs for just 34 and last four for 30 negated the 80/1 foundation.GettyImages-695872478
  • Pakistani bowlers were supreme with ball. Hasan Ali (MOM- 10-35-3), helped England in the losing cause. Other bowlers Junaid and debutant Raees also picked up 2 wickets a piece.
  • Pakistani fielding, a rather sad sight in this tournament, rose to the occasion and lifted up themselves to show what has been a classic display on feild. The catch of Moen Ali or the run out of Rashid, showed the effort the boys had put in.
  • Pakistani batting, their Achilles heal, calibrated as a unit and with the power packed innings of Azhar Ali (76) and Fakhar Zaman (57), made sure that England had no fighting back. Their 118 for opening wicket is highest for Pakistan in CT history. The powerful bowling attack looked feeble as the Asian side scripted a wonderful win in Cardiff. GettyImages-695931098
  • This win of Pakistan is only the fourth ICC ODI tournament semi final win. Pakistan will meet the winners of India and Bangladesh cash, another classic encounter.

Riding the African Safari

India Vs South Africa: In the pre tournament Article,”Building up of Champion”, it was mentioned that South Africa needn’t fight opposition, it has to fight itself and quite indeed. India didn’t defeat Africa, they defeated themselves. Chokers huh ! The snapshot review of the match:

  • Winning toss and Putting Africa into bat, the decision by Kohli came into doubt when Proteas posted 75-0 in 15 overs. lack of another pacer was quite evident but then the newest addition, Ashwin picked Amla.

  • After that the lone survivor De Kock also fell for 53. After that the run outs of Devilliers and Miller broke the aspirations of Africa and they lost rest 8 wickets for 51 posting a feeble 191. The Indian feilding was worth mentioning and it kept building on pressure.BUm

  • Bumrah (MOM) 8-0-28-2 and Bhuvi 7.3-0-23-2 while every other bowlers took wicket a piece. Three run outs will definitely pose questions on African’s ability to run between Wickets.

  • Indian bowlers had done their job, it was time for Batsman and they didn’t disappoint. Dhawan (78) and Kohli(76) made sure there was no late resurgence from Africa. Dhawan has now 6 50+ scores in 8 innings. Joint Indian highest. He has also broken Sachin’s record of fastest 1000 runs in CT. vkk

  • The win has knocked out Africa out while in all probability, has set up an Indian clash with Bangladesh in Semis. With this win, India continued its dominance over South Africa in Champions Trophy winning all 4 games. For make the equations different, the winning team of today (Pakistan Vs Srilanka), has to win by 270+ runs.

Australia (Ban)g out !

Australia Vs England: 2003 World Cup, Kenya qualifies for Semis. 2017 Champions Trophy, Bangladesh qualifies for Semis: A better love story, isn’t it? Well, Australia had just one task in hand, to not lose and they ended up doing that, badly indeed. Snapshot review of the match:

  • Australian innings can be divided into two parts. First 42 over and the second, last 8. 239-4 at 42.2, a platform for big total was set. And then Australia pulled a mess. Losing 7 wickets for 15 runs, more like India’s 7/11 show (remember?)

  • Mark Wood and Rashid did the maximum of damage and in this quest, Wood registered best bowling figures by an English bowler in CT history. Rashid’s 4/41 is the best by an English Spinner in CT history. Remarkable feet, indeed.Adil-Rashid

  • This match was just like a copy of previous match. Initially New Zealand hitting but Bangladesh pulling back things and then while batting, being reduced for 31/4. England too was reduced to 35/3. But then Morgan and stokes Stitched a partnership of 159 runs: highest 4th wicket partnership in CT to bring Barmy Army on winning ways.

  • England was ahead of the Duckworth Lewis Stern par score by 40 runs when rain interuppted the play and prolonged interuption handed England a handsome win by 40 runs.

  • Eoin Morgan looks like to be in subprime form scoring 14th 50+ score against Australia, highest by an English batsman in history. Stokes got a double – 1000 runs and 50 wickets. Indeed he is made for more.Ben-Stokes-1

  • The win means that Bangladesh has qualified along with England to the semis. The two other teams will be decided in next two matches.

Magical Turnaround

Bangladesh Vs New Zealand: Bangladesh is known for big upsets and man, they did it again. We were hardly over the two big upsets, Pakistan and Srilankan win, but Bangladesh’s win was greatest of all, ousting Kiwis. The snapshot review of the match :

  • New Zealand was in the match for first 12 overs in either innings. While batting, they were at 69/1 but found themselves reeling at 252/8. 265 was never enough, they knew.Bangladesh

  • Williamson(57), the highest run getter of the tournament, was again fluent with the bat. Ross Taylor also supported quite brilliantly (63) . Neil Broom and Martin Guptill also contributed but all of these wasn’t enough.

  • Come batting for Bangladesh and goes batting for Bangladesh. 33/4 and all the holes were shattered. But not for their greatest player ever: Shakib Al Hasan(114) and upcoming star Mahmudullah(102). They both stitched a partnership of 224 runs, highest from Bangladesh ever to seal, what can be called one of their greatest win ever .Shakib

  • In 2005, Bangladesh defeated Australia and now they have ousted New Zealand. What was game changing for Tigers was their death bowling. The loss has knocked out New Zealand and Bangladesh’s hope of going ahead depend on Australia – England’s match result.

Gone with the Rain !!!

South Africa Vs Pakistan: 1992 Cricket World Cup- First semifinal- 22 needed off 1 ball. Ring a bell? South Africa and Rain has always been at arm’s length and specifically in major ICC tournaments. Nevertheless, Junaids Yorkers and Hasan swingers and Imad and Hafeez’s turners have made one thing possible, a win for Pakistan after 8 years in Champions Trophy. Presenting you the snapshot:
– The start was very ordinary by African. Just like building a foundation for bigger score. The difference was created when spinners came into attack.

  • Wickets at regular intervals, ensuing ABD’s first golden duck, saw Proteas reeling at 118/6. Morris and Miller and then Rabada made sure Africa had a challenging total.

  • Hasan was brilliant with the ball. 8-1-24-3 were his figures. Junaid and Imad also picked up two each. A special mention about Pak’s feilding which was at par, very much.SAvPAK6

  • Pakistan knew the challenge wasn’t easy against African bowlers. Also rain was a consideration which later proved favourable for them. Shoaib Mallik’s intelligent batting kept Pak above the DLS rate.

  • Morne Morkel was simply brilliant with ball. 7-1-18-3. Had any other bowlers supported him, the matters would have been different. Rabada and Parnell were pretty expensive.2

  • A win for Pakistan means that the group has now opened up. All the remaining matches has became very interesting unlike group A. Off the record, rain has been a constant source of disturbance and once again it has stole a nail bitting match.
